Canada's record try-scorer DTH van der Merwe joined Newcastle Falcons from Welsh region Scarlets in the summer of 2017, having won the Pro 12 title with two different clubs. Known as DTH (full name Daniel Tailliferrer Hauman van der Merwe), the flying winger was born in South Africa but moved to Canada with his family as a teenager. Initially moving to Saracens in 2007 following his Rugby World Cup exploits, the qualified fire-fighter went on to enjoy a successful five-season spell with Glasgow Warriors which culminated in him scoring a try in their 2015 Pro 12 final victory over Munster. Switching to Welsh side Scarlets the following season and continuing his try-scoring form, Van der Merwe's seven seasons in the Pro 12 saw him dotting down an impressive 46 tries in 106 outings, his last season at Parc Y Scarlets seeing him score a try in the Pro 12 final as they lifted the title. Making his international debut for Canada in 2006, he has played in three Rugby World Cups, scoring in every single pool game during the 2015 tournament, and in 2017 became national team co-captain.
