Newcastle FalconsÂ’ Under-18s recorded a 20-11 victory over the Scottish Borders at Druid Park on Sunday.
Having drawn with Edinburgh the previous weekend, the Falcons youngsters took the lead against Borders as wing John Summers rounded off a well-worked try with forwards and backs in tandem.Borders got themselves in to an 8-5 lead courtesy of a penalty and try, before left wing Will Latta nudged Newcastle back ahead with an unconverted try, hitting a good inside support line.
The game’s turning point came when Newcastle fullback Peter Evans struck a 35-metre drop goal against the run of play, before centre Peter Homan ran 80 metres for a converted interception try to round off the scoring.
Falcons junior academy manager, Mark Laycock, said afterwards: "As with last week there were some outstanding individual performances.
"Probably the most pleasing thing from our point of view was how well the lads are playing when they are under pressure.
“Last week the boys kept the ball for 18 phases to score a try with the last play of the game, and this week they showed a lot of character to come from behind with about 10-15 minutes to go to grind out the win.”
