There was a surprise winner at the Newcastle Falcons golf day this week, as Newcastle United footballer Peter Ramage walked away with the trophy.
The 22-year-old was a guest of the club at the Matfen Hall course in Northumberland for the annual golf day, sponsored by Audi, and such were his exploits on the fairways that he beat the whole Falcons squad and the rest of the field in some style.Despite his status as a soccer star in the north-east, Ramage does enjoy an association with the oval ball game, as his dad Iain is an international rugby union referee and former Gosforth scrum half.
With the Toon defender recording a comfortable victory, it was left to James Grindal and Andy Long to restore pride for the Falcons as Grindal and his UBS team earned second place, while Long and his guests from 02 came third.
Falcons director of rugby, Rob Andrew, presented Ramage with his trophy, saying: Peter played fantastic golf out there today, and I think a few of our boys have a hard summer ahead of them working on their swing!
