Newcastle Falcons pair Tom Catterick and Will Welch helped England Under-20s to a 27-6 victory over their Scottish counterparts at Firhill in Glasgow on Friday.
Catterick started at fullback in the Six Nations clash, with flanker Welch coming on as a second-half replacement.England coach Mark Mapletoft said: "We're not going to hide from the fact that we've been lacking accuracy and a finishing edge to our play as we've had a fairly decent platform from the forwards in all four games.
"This is the first time I really felt we were challenging the other side with some of our lines and our passing and offloading. We've still got a long way to go but I've no doubt that we'll get better and better.
"We had a harsh lesson to learn with three guys in sin bin and it's not been a one-off. We've had six yellow cards and a red card in the four matches in this tournament.
"We also know we should have pushed on but overall this was a very good step forward. We've got a tough test against France next week and we need to step up again - that is the standard now for the rest of the season."
