The North East and Cumbria public flocked to Kingston Park last night to witness an exhibition match of the highest proportions, as Newcastle Falcons swept aside Tonga with a 24-13 triumph.
And a real draw for fans across the region was the pre-match ‘Sipi Tau’ which you can watch now on Falcons TV courtesy of Sky Tyne & Wear by clicking here.
Putting the Pacific Islanders to the sword by virtue of three tries and the boot of Joel Hodgson, Dean Richards’ troops made it 12 wins out of 12 for the season as the Falcons march on.
After the game Falcons boss Richards and scorer of the third and final try Mark Wilson spoke to the gathering media pitch side.
Richards said: “It is great to see so many youngsters here tonight, and the pre-match ‘Sipi Tau’ will certainly live with them for a long time.
“In terms of the game I thought the front-row were outstanding, and if you had asked me to pick a man-of-the-match I would have picked someone from the front-row as I thought they were in fine form.
“I was delighted with the way that they dealt with a really good international front-row that over the years have caused England a lot of problems.”
Back-row Wilson, who finished off an exquisite attacking move to secure the victory for his side, was in buoyant mood after the game.
“I’m really chuffed and the changing room was buzzing after the game,” said the Kendal-born front-man.
“It’s a big scalp for us to beat Tonga, and the boys were really happy with how they played – on the whole we went out and did what we had to do,” added Wilson.
