Aussie Orr delighted with dream debut

The Aussie back-rower, a summer signing from Ealing, crossed in his debut after coming on at half-time against Sale Sharks, Newcastle winning a home qualifier which also included games against Leicester Tigers and Worcester Warriors.

Orr said: “It was unreal experience for my first run-out in Newcastle colours and of course we were over the moon at the result.

“I have played a little bit of sevens back home in Australia, but to do it in a Premiership environment was fantastic and in front of our home fans.

“I was probably very fortunate to score with my first touch. I was surprised, to be honest, but obviously happy at the same time that the field opened up the way it did for me.”

Admitting there is still plenty of work to do ahead of finals day at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on Sunday August 7, the former Australia Under-20s cap said: “It was far from perfect, really.

“We over-committed to the ruck, we were a bit narrow in defence and the real fast guys exploited us in that area. We need to work on that going in to the finals, but if we do that then we can definitely be a dangerous side.

“The main thing we had going for us was just that we stuck at it. We played to our strengths, guys like Joel Hodgson and Tom Catterick ran the show and we also needed the hard work of our forwards. We ran hard, and that was crucial.”

Sporting a beaming smile at the end of his first competitive shift, Orr added: “I am absolutely loving it here. Pre-season has been great, we have got plenty of quality work in and now I am just relishing getting into some games now.”
