Newcastle Falcons is delighted to announce that the club’s Community Foundation, alongside partner organisation Greggs, have won this year’s North East Collaborative Action award for their work with the Newcastle Falcons rugby club on its Tackling Health initiative.

The award recognises businesses that pool resources and work together to make a positive impact on a key social or environmental issue through their collaborative action.

Tackling Health comprises a range of coaching, educational and engagement measures and events run at 15 primary schools across the North East, where Greggs has already implemented its successful Breakfast Club scheme.

Falcons Community Foundation coaches worked closely with Greggs and each of the schools to deliver a five week programme of tag rugby and Healthy Schools Education, with pupils also receiving a visit from a Falcons player and Flash the Falcon.

The programme culminated on the final day of the 2014/15 season when the Community Foundation held a Tackling Health competition supported by Greggs which saw 350 children play tag rugby on the main pitch at Kingston Park Stadium before the Falcons game against Harlequins.

Speaking about the award win Melanie Magee, Head of Community and Marketing at Newcastle Falcons, said: “We’re really proud to have won an award alongside Greggs for the work we’ve done together this year.

“The Falcons Community Foundation deliver a number of programmes in schools and clubs across the region but Tackling Health has been particularly innovative and has allowed us to engage large numbers of children across the North East with not only rugby but the important healthy eating message too.

“The dedication Greggs have to their community work, particularly spreading the message of healthy eating amongst the next generation, is fantastic, and we’re thrilled to be working so closely with them on this programme.”
