Baldwin calls for greater accuracy

Defence coach Scott Baldwin called for more accuracy from his Newcastle Falcons charges following Friday’s home defeat to Harlequins, but insisted a first league win of the season is not far away.

The Falcons were defeated 24-3 in front of a season-high crowd, with Baldwin saying: “It’s frustrating for the players and coaches because it’s the same thing every week.

“We do so much good, and defend for long periods, but then we don’t stick to the plan and we concede.

“The boys are putting in so much effort and their spirit is incredible, but we’ve just got to be more accurate. It’s killing us in games, to be honest.

“We’ve lost a lot of games now, a number of which we have been very close in. The energy in the group is fantastic and the boys really turn up every week ready to work, but we just need to have a higher degree of accuracy.

“I see the mistakes we’re making in training repeating themselves on match days, and we just need to be more consistent in what we’re doing.”

The former Welsh international added: “I don’t feel we’re a million miles away because we create a lot of opportunities, but it’s that last pass or that little error that’s costing us.

“I spoke in the media after the defeat at home to Montpellier, and said this isn’t an acceptable result for this group. I feel the same tonight, to be honest, because that was a winnable game.

“I feel like this group is good enough to have won this game tonight. We didn’t put our best performance out there, and although I don’t think we’re far away from that first win, I appreciate it must feel like it for our supporters.

“They were fantastic again tonight and they came out in great numbers, which we’re enormously grateful for.

“We want to do it for those guys just to thank them for the way they’re sticking behind the team, and I’m 100% confident it will happen.

“Once we nail one of these I feel you’ll see a massive increase in our belief, and when you get into those tight spots in games it gives you the confidence to see it through.

“There’s no-one more disappointed than the players in that changing room, I can promise you, and the guys are going out there every week and putting their bodies on the line.

“I can’t fault the effort, but we just need to be more accurate with it.”

The Falcons’ next assignment comes on Friday January 12 when Italian side Benetton visit Kingston Park.
