BARROW REFRESHED AND READY TO GO
Dom Barrow was one of the highlights of the Falcons return to the top flight with a number of eye catching performances in both the second and back row and while injuries reduced his number of performances, they did little to impact on the quality.
“I’m definitely planning on staying out of the treatment room this season!” quipped the 21 year old whose summer has seen him recharge through a trip to Mexico and some quality time with family and friends in Sheffield.
Into his second season at Kingston Park, and fully settled into the North East, Barrow returned to training alongside his teammates this week and is enthused by how the first week has progressed.
“The first lot of training for the year has been good, tough, as you would expect but really encouraging. You can tell there are some real ambitions in the squad for this year. We are determined to kick on from last year.”
“We’ve been doing a lot of running and testing to see where we are, and so far we’ve seen a lot of the lads in good shape and really turning in some impressive work which is a good base to start pre season from. There is plenty of hard work ahead, but I think we’ve started pre season really well.”
While this summer has allowed him to have some time away from the field, Barrow has been keeping a close eye on the exploits of England in their Junior World Championship campaign with a number of friends still present in the squad from his spell.
Speaking ahead of the win against the junior Springboks, Dom has been impressed with how the team have performed.
“They have done very, very well. You don’t get any easy games at the World Cup, they had to play Argentina and Australia in the pool who are two very tough teams, but have come through that stage unbeaten and won very convincingly in the semi final against Ireland.”
“South Africa are a very tough team as we know, we lost to them in the group stage last year. It will be a massive test but it will be great if England manage to retain it.”
Looking ahead to the start of the new season in September, Barrow is now focused on securing himself a place in the team and playing a big part in the Falcons push.
“There’s a lot of healthy competition for places now so everyone is going to have to work hard to stake a claim for a shirt and to play regularly, which is a good thing. Last year our back row was pretty much picking itself towards the end of the season with their performances so I would like to be doing that myself this year and doing a job wherever the coaches feel I can.”
