Captain Welch Praises “Outstanding” Team Performance
Newcastle Falcons Skipper Will Welch was a happy man following his side’s 26-14 victory at home to Leicester Tigers on Friday night.
Praising his fellow Falcons for an outstanding team performance, Welch said: “It was an outstanding effort from all the boys. We kept our composure, kept our disciple, and stayed committed for the full 80 minutes, and that won us the game.”
With the exception of one short, second half spell in which the Tigers scored their only try of the game, the Falcons were dominant throughout, working hard to third placed Aviva Premiership side at bay.
“They’re a good side and they’re always going to have their spells where they’re going to get on top of you; it’s Leicester at the end of the day.
“But it’s about making sure you weather that, keep your discipline and believe that you’re going to get out of those situations, then at some point put pressure back on them.”
With the result over Leicester marking his side’s fifth consecutive home victory, the flanker asserted that confidence within the Falcons’ camp is high.
“We’ve got some good form at home now and I think we’re in good form in general. We’re starting to show that we’re moving forward and that when we perform for 80 minutes we’re more than a match for anyone, and we showed that against Tigers.
“It helps that we’ve got a bit of momentum. We’ve stuck with the same team for the last few weeks bar a couple of changes. And that consistency in selection when you’re playing well is good; it helps because the boys know what everyone else is doing and it breeds confidence.
“We’ve just got to make sure we keep that going, especially at home.”
And the 25-year-old is enjoying the perks of his role as Club Captain given the Falcons’ recent run of form.
“Being captain is always easier when you’re winning! Everything is much more enjoyable obviously, but we’ve just got to make sure we don’t rest on our laurels.
“It’s another big game for us next weekend against Northampton so we’ll enjoy this win tonight but back on the horse ready for Sunday.”
