Captains Log – Home form key
Will Welch believes he and his team mates find themselves in a good place as the Aviva Premiership approaches the half way stage with this weekend’s game away to Wasps.
The Falcons captain has seen his side extend their winning run at Kingston Park to four from four in all competitions, with healthy vocal crowds turning out to see those victories.
While providing signs of progress for the club both on and off the field, the skipper is determined that his side remain fully focused on a key period of league action.
Speaking to Falcons TV, Welch said, “I think recently we’ve been in a pretty good place, you’ve mentioned the run of form at home which is a big factor and is going to be a big factor for the second half of the season. We want to make sure we pick up those big wins at home as we did at the weekend.”
“There was a couple of disappointing results with Irish and the Russian side away, but I’d like to think that we have fixed some of the things that went wrong there and that we are now on the up again after two big wins against Brive and Harlequins.”
“We’re not hanging our hat on the fact we had a good performance at home against Quins because we know Wasps away are a pretty formidable outfit and we are going to have to be on the top of our game.”
With a first trip to Wasps new home first up this weekend, Welch says that while the team have taken confidence from their home form, the primary focus has been on the challenge ahead.
“We will take a little bit of confidence from last weekend, but we are starting afresh. Wasps are on good form at the minute, form wise they are probably one of the best in Europe and they have a good squad. They have a good set piece, a good pack and threats out wide.”
“Being at home, their expectation will be to win but our expectation is we have to pick up a result, we have nine important games in the next block and it’s important that we look at every one as like a cup final. We need to start looking up and picking up wins.”
