Catterick pleased with Exeter performance.
The 23 year old was 51st minute substitution for Sinoti Sinoti and scored the 61st minute try that allowed the Falcons to tie the scores at 24 all after supporting a fine break from Gonalo Tiesi in what was a crucial point of the match.
And while the score saw the 4,216 in attendance at Kingston Park raise the proverbial roof, Catterick himself is much more modest about his five pointer.
“It was alright, but to be honest, I count myself lucky that I was able to be on the end of a good line break from Gonz, but it was happy days that we got the try.”
On a day where the Falcons much vaunted new attacking game plan delivered the result that had been threatened in games against Leicester Tigers and London Irish, Catterick said that the squad were generally pleased with how they performed.
“I think on the whole it was a good performance against Exeter. Our attack was good both halves and I think our defence was pretty good too. Our kick chase wasn’t good in the first half but once we fixed that I think we looked pretty solid.”
“We gave a few stupid penalties away, one from myself as soon as I came on which I’ve been brought up on already so I need to be careful of that. It was pretty good though, it was a solid game.”
While the fans may have been watching the scoreboard nervously before the two minute blitz that secured the four league points, Catterick says he and his team-mates remained confident.
“The only point I worried was when I gave that stupid penalty away – but it was a case of putting it out of the mind and moving onto the next job because we were never out of the game.”
“Even at seven points down, the belief within the squad was there, we knew exactly what we needed to do and everyone executed it well.”
The eruption of noise and emotion as the final whistle sounded on Sunday showed how much the result meant to all involved with the club and whilst there were celebrations afterwards, Catterick says the focus has already moved to this weekend’s game away at London Welsh
“The mood in the changing room was good – a lot chirpier than it has been. There were a few boys dancing, a bit of pizza so it was good. But we won’t get carried away. There’s a big game next week and another one we want to win so we’ll just look forward to that.”
