Codling laments early indiscipline

Newcastle Falcons head coach Alex Codling admitted first-half indiscipline cost his side after Friday’s 18-14 home loss against Gloucester.

A weather-affected game at Kingston Park saw Storm Babet limiting the attacking ambition of both teams, with the hosts battling for a losing bonus point in driving wind and rain.

Speaking afterwards, Codling said: “It’s very similar to last weekend in many respects.

“In the last 20 minutes I really felt we took it to Gloucester, but the disappointment for me was the first half when we lost the penalty count ten to two and gave away a yellow card.

“Ultimately that’s where we lost the game, and we came up short there.”

Scoring a penalty try and a thrilling run from Adam Radwan, Codling said: “We missed a couple of set-piece opportunities but eventually scored with the penalty try via our maul.

“We came close on a couple of others and obviously had Adam’s try, but the Premiership is decided by fine margins.

“Once again I’m proud of the effort from the players because they showed plenty of heart and resilience, but it wasn’t quite enough.

“Our bench made a bit of an impact and we knew we had the wind second half, but the margins are tight and we were just on the wrong side of it.

“We’ve now got another home game against Northampton a week on Sunday to put things right, and with a little more accuracy and hopefully some better conditions we can hopefully get that win that everyone is working so hard towards.”
