Codling reacts to Saracens loss
Newcastle Falcons head coach Alex Codling made no attempt to hide from the score-line as mistakes and indiscipline played their part in Sunday’s 50-12 home loss to Saracens.
The Londoners demonstrated their champion class in a clinical Kingston Park encounter, with Codling saying: “Saracens showed why they’re a champion team, and that’s the bottom line.
“We spoke about momentum during the week, and when you give it to a team like Saracens it’s very hard to get it back.
“We gave them plenty of it and hardly saw the ball for the last 20 minutes of the first half.
“We started brightly at the start of the second half, but ultimately we were a long way short.
“The score-line doesn’t often lie, although last weekend at Harlequins I felt it didn’t tell the full story.
“Today we started brightly and scored the first try, but after that we made too many errors and were far too indisciplined.”
Still searching for their first league win of the season, the head coach said: “It’s a bigger challenge than I thought it was when I came into the job, and there’s no silver bullet.
“On the positive side, I thought Eduardo Bello on his first start was magnificent, and I’ve said that in the changing rooms.
“The Argentina boys have all come back from the World Cup and they’re absolutely knackered, but they love this club and they’re a shining light.
“Lolo [Bello] played really well and made a big difference for us, which is a huge positive, but there weren’t many others.”
Travelling over the Pennines on Friday in search of that first Premiership victory, Codling added: “We’ve got a five-day turnaround going into the Sale away game, and you can look at it one of two ways.
“It’s either not much time to prep, or it’s a short enough time to dust yourselves down and go again.
“We’ve got to be a lot better than we were this afternoon, and I’m not going to dress it up any other way.”
Newcastle Falcons’ home game is on Sunday November 26 when Exeter Chiefs visit Kingston Park.
