Community Foundation Makes Magic Impression
The Falcons Community Foundation were at the centre of proceedings last week as the rugby league world turned their attention on Newcastle for First Utility Super League’s Magic Weekend at St James’ Park.
Beginning with an event in the city centre last week, Falcons Community Foundation coaches accompanied young rugby league players from across the region onto the pitch at Newcastle United’s stadium.
Almost 300 players appeared at the stadium to represent the three strands of the Sky Try programme; girls’ rugby, primary league and Embed the Pathway, before meeting with all twelve Super League team captains in the run up to Magic Weekend.
The following weekend North East rugby was represented by Catterick RLFC who acted as mascots and flag bearers in Saturday’s third game of the day between Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, and by Gateshead Storm, who showcased local junior rugby league on the main pitch during a break in Sunday’s proceedings.
Sky Try Coach Joe Brown said: “The Sky Try programme is a fantastic way to help get more young people involved in rugby league throughout the region, so to showcase the work we’re doing on such a big stage as Magic Weekend was a great opportunity.
“Hosting Magic Weekend has created a great buzz around rugby league in the city and that’s something we plan to utilise to allow us to develop the programme even further over the coming weeks and months.”
Run by the Falcons Community Foundation in association with the RFL and Falcons’ partner club Newcastle Thunder, Sky Try is a seven year programme which aims to make a difference by increasing the amount of viewers, spectators and participants to Rugby League.
