Davis set for second England U20s cap

Newcastle Falcons scrum-half Joe Davis is in line to win his second England Under-20s cap on Friday when they travel to take on their Welsh counterparts in search of a Grand Slam.

The former Barnard Castle School and Bishop Auckland half-back made his debut for the 20s in last Friday’s 33-24 home win over Italy, setting up the last try having come on as a second-half replacement.

The 19-year-old Davis has scored two tries in his ten first-team appearances for the Falcons, having shone in his first season after leaving school.

His England Under-20s side lead the standings going into the final round, with the reigning world and Six Nations champions winning all four of their games in this season’s competition.

Friday’s 7.30pm kick-off at Cardiff Arms Park is being shown live on BBC iPLayer, with head coach Mark Mapletoft saying: “Our players have taken the opportunities presented to them, overcoming difficult tests week-on-week, and have impressed as a brotherhood.

“The team have been on a journey over the past two months, and the progression has been very pleasing. That said, there’s so much to play for, and our squad have prepared diligently to amplify their strengths and take that final step forwards in Cardiff, whatever it takes.

“The staff and I want the players to give their all and exceed the expectations of the occasion that lies ahead of us this week.”
