Empowering girls through rugby and confidence: Gosforth East Middle leads the way
Tuesday May 20, 2025 marked a special day at Gosforth East Middle School, where the pitch came alive with energy, determination, and team spirit during an inspiring Girls Rugby Tournament in collaboration with Newcastle PE and School Sport Service.
Newcastle Rugby Foundation were proud to attend and support the event, celebrating not only the athleticism and enthusiasm of the young players but also a powerful story unfolding off the field.
What made this tournament even more meaningful was the spotlight on a group of remarkable Year 7 girls from the school who have launched their very own body confidence clothing business – a charitable initiative built by 12 and 13-year-olds with a passion for empowering others.
From hoodies to t-shirts, all designed and sold by the girls themselves, the merchandise carries positive messaging around body image, self-worth, and resilience. Proceeds from the project are being donated to youth mental health causes, underlining the impact these young changemakers are already making in their community.
This initiative arrives at a vital moment, following Body Confidence Week 2025, a national campaign focused on supporting young people’s self-image and well-being. With the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 on the horizon, this tournament and the girls’ initiative echo the tournament’s spirit – lifting each other up, challenging stereotypes, and championing inclusion.
“I love rugby because it allows me to express myself,” said one of the girls. “But we want everyone to feel comfortable, which is why we’ve started the brand. One of our friends struggled with her confidence so we started it to help her, and it’s just grown.”
Newcastle Rugby Foundation are proud to support events like this that unite sport, education, and community action. As we head towards the Women’s Rugby World Cup, stories like this one remind us of the incredible potential of the next generation.
We have an array of programmes aimed at getting girls into rugby. If you’re interested in finding out more, please email gavin.beasley@newcastle-falcons.co.uk.
