Fairbrother Out To Impress On Falcons Trial
As Newcastle Falcons head into their opening Kings of the North match against Sale Sharks this weekend, one man hoping to get the opportunity to impress is Dave Fairbrother.
Currently on trial with the club, the 27 year old is hoping to have the chance to impress before he has to return to his day job as a Royal Marine Commando.
A stalwart of the Royal Navy rugby union side in recent years, and the current holder of the Cossack Sword award for most ground gained and held within that team, Fairbrother has continued to make a name for himself in rugby away from the day job, having won the county championship with Lancashire in 2014 and represented National League One side Fylde earlier this year.
Earlier this summer Fairbrother was brought to the Falcons on trial after a mutual friend put the Back Row in touch with Director of Rugby Dean Richards.
“I was really nervous turning up here with such big names, but everyone accepted me with open arms so that really did help. Training is very different to the stuff I’m used to because it’s all scientific but it’s been good.”
After playing in the annual Army vs Navy game at Twickenham, Fairbrother is no stranger to pressure on the rugby field.
“When I played in the Army Navy game I think it was a full house of 86,000. It was terrifying but you just kind of switch off and get on with it.
“It’s a different pressure from what I’m used to but it’s the same ways of dealing with it. You’ve got your friends around you and about 40,000 people supporting you and 40,000 hating you so you just have to get on with it.”
As the Falcons prepare for the opening game of the Kings of the North tournament this weekend, Fairbrother is keen to take any chances that come his way.
“You just have to give it your best shot. I’ve given it 100% and hoping it will be good enough to be able to impress.”
