Members of the Newcastle Falcons academy and AASE programme have been rewarded for their performances at county level, by earning places in North of England squad.

Connor Beswick, Tom Briggs, Tom Collins, Larry Mew, Mike Newstead, Joe Pickering, James Telford, Joe Towers will now take part in two training weekends as part of that squad, which will include a game on February 7th against a combined Newcastle Falcons / Yorkshire Carnegie academy team.

From there, the North of England side will play games against their counterparts from the London, the Midlands, South East and South West over the weekend of February 19th, with places in an England Clubs and Schools side at stake for a Tri Nations tournament in Ireland at the end of March.

The North of England squad is drawn from the best players representing Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire, with the call ups for the Falcons representatives coming as a result of the players impressing in the county matches played in October and November.

Falcons academy coach Aiden McNulty said: “We’re very pleased for the lads who have been selected for the North of England squad, it is fantastic recognition of the work they are doing as part of the academy and the AASE scheme at Gosforth Academy for those who are part of that programme.”

“This is an excellent player development pathway and is the same that Ruaridh Dawson followed last season, before stepping up to make his first appearance for the club’s senior side this season. We wish all of the lads well and hope to see them shine.”
