The Falcons begin their season away to Jersey Reds in the Championship Cup on Saturday, with the first home game following on Sunday September 29 when Doncaster Knights visit Kingston Park Stadium.

The Greene King IPA Championship begins on Saturday October 12 at London Scottish, with Hartpury University being the first league visitors to the North East on Friday October 18.

Scrum-half Michael Young (pictured), who this season assumes the co-captaincy with hooker George McGuigan, said: “We’ve got a great set of leaders here and it’s just a case of helping to point the guys in the right direction to get the results we need.

“Pre-season has been long due to the Rugby World Cup and the way the fixtures have fallen, but the boys have been working hard.

“The players are all itching to get out there to release a bit of tension that has been building up, and it’s a new start for us.”

Determined to bounce back to the Premiership at the first attempt, Young added: “It’s no secret that we’ve had to learn from the disappointment of last season, but we’ve done that now and parked it.

“We’ve got a big challenge on our hands now for the coming season, but I really feel like we’re progressing as a team.”
