Falcons Community Moment of the Month

Monday 29 April 2024 Written by: Tom Grisedale

Our Moment of the Month award for April is awarded to Morpeth RFC. Where at the end of last month, they held a girl’s festival which saw a huge number of teams from across the Northeast attend.

Good Friday saw the fourth Morpeth Girls’ Festival with the biggest attendance yet of approximately 400 players. Clubs came from across the region including the Borders, Northumberland, County Durham, and Teesside making their way to Mitford Road.

Competitive festivals were held for all four of the girl’s section age groups with under-12s, under-14s, under-16s and a competitive under-18s competition running. The event was so big it had to be split over two time slots with the u12s and u14s enjoying the morning slot, and the u16s and u18s just about managing to miss the thunder and lightning in the afternoon.

Massive thank you must go to the Northumberland Referee Society for their support in the afternoon and to all the clubs for self-refereeing in the morning.

Newcastle Rugby Foundation also supported the event with college coach Zoe Hornby in attendance as pitch marshal, promoting the opportunities to study on the Rugby Excellence programme at Tynemet College.

Zoe Hornby, College Coach and Falcons Community Development Officer said: “The girls’ festival at Morpeth was a great opportunity for the local clubs to showcase what they have been doing at their clubs this season. As well as allowing teams to play extra competitive fixtures.

“It was nice to see so many smiles on faces in the end-of-season tournament for the young future stars of North East rugby”.
