Falcons fly in World Cup qualifier
Newcastle Falcons’ Nick Civetta and DTH van der Merwe proved to be pivotal men for the USA and Canada respectively last Saturday, with double try scoring contributions for both players in a pulsating World Cup qualifier.
New signing van der Merwe was named man of the match as the Canadian co-captain became his country’s all time leading try scorer, while sophomore Falcon Civetta made it three tries in three games for the Eagles with his brace.
With Evan Olmstead also performing well in the Canadian pack, the game ended 28 all and sets up a huge game at the weekend, as the nations aim to qualify for 2019 in Japan as Americas 1 and join Argentina, England, France and Oceania 2 in pool C.
Down in the Southern Hemisphere, new signing Tevita Cavabuti started in Fiji’s impressive win over Scotland as the islanders put in a display that showed the full spectrum of their game, with big hits and flowing running rugby.
