Falcons fly south for Singha 7s Final
Tom Penny is urging his Newcastle Falcons teammates to give their all in the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series Final in order to fly into league action in the best possible way.
Newcastle Falcons made the most of home advantage on Saturday as they won all three of their Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series Group D matches – scoring 123 points in the process.
This was enough to see them join Sale Sharks, Gloucester Rugby, Harlequins, Wasps, Exeter Chiefs, Newport Gwent Dragons and Scarlets at Twickenham Stoop for tonight’s 7s Finals.
Falcons face Scarlets in their quarter-final clash and Penny knows how important getting their hands on the first piece of club silverware this season could be when Aviva Premiership Rugby returns.
“I expect it will be a great atmosphere, a lot of rugby fans down there,” said Penny.
It’s quite a short commute for a lot of the rugby clubs but it would be great if we could gets some of the Falcons supporters down. Obviously it’s a bit of a trek but it will be a great atmosphere, great rugby and a great event.
“A lot of teams are looking forward to the Aviva Premiership but that doesn’t start for a while and it would be great to get the silverware as a boost for the start of the season.
“Obviously it’s going to be a big first clash against Scarlets. A few Falcons’ boys stood out for me at Kingston Park – Gavin Lowe especially he scored a few tries, Callum Chick, the captain too. He’s only 18 and he’s proving that he’s a pretty good captain and hopefully he’ll lead the boys to victory.
“There are a lot of youngsters who will be involved at the Singha 7s on Friday so it will be good to see them come through and see if they can prove themselves.”
Regardless of what happens at the home of Quins on Friday night, Penny admits the atmosphere at Kingston Park Stadium last weekend will live long in the memory.
“It was a really good atmosphere at Kingston Park,” he added.
“Obviously it’s a great spectacle seeing 7s – a lot of good, fast rugby, and it’s a good experience for the younger lads to be blended in with a bit of experience as well.
“It’s a good gateway to prove themselves to the coaches and the fans and to get an idea of the sort of atmosphere they could be playing in. And its pretty fast so it gets the lungs going as well so it’s a good pre-season opener.”
The Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series Final is today 28 August. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children on the gate at the Twickenham Stoop.
