Falcons Hit Eight Year Opening Day High

The double header event, with Gateshead Thunder vs Hemel Stags on after the Falcons game, was the best attended since 6,551 turned up to the Falcons vs Worcester Warriors in September 2006. It eclipsed last season’s home opener vs Bath (4,597) by over a thousand as well as the corresponding fixture with Irish which was seen by 4740 spectators.

Speaking about the increased numbers marketing director Keith Christie commented: “Whilst we understand we still have a long way to go before we are filling Kingston Park on a regular basis this is a step in the right direction. The increased numbers of season ticket holders, the day being a double header event, new big screen and the obvious attraction of the new 3G pitch all helped in building yesterday’s attendance.”

“However the biggest factor was the work the players put in at over 20 regional rugby clubs earlier in the week. They all gave up their free time to coach young people and adult players, some of them travelling 4 hour round trips to do so. It paid off as we had hundreds come off the back of their work and it was great to see Kingston Park awash with the colours of so many north east and Cumbrian clubs”

“We did have a couple of issues such as queues at the ticket office at kick-off time but that was just due to the sheer volume of people that turned up on the day. We would urge fans to pre-book their tickets as it will cut down the queues and you save £2 on match-day prices.”

“We also completely sold out of programmes, however we have managed to get some back post game from the team and media areas. These are on sale via the shop for those supporters who would like a copy.”

“Looking forward the Friday night games vs Gloucester and the Christmas fixture against Saracens are already looking strong for early pre-sales. However before that we have the champions Northampton Saints this Sunday kicking off at 2.00pm. We need everyone back if possible, bring a mate and re-create yesterday’s vibrant atmosphere.”
