Falcons join the Movember crusade

This year Newcastle Falcons will be once again joining thousands of ‘Mo Bros’ throughout the world to take part in Movember (formerly known as November).

Led by hooker Rob Hawkins, Falcons players are asking fans, partners and colleagues to join them in their Movember crusade and bring the moustache back to help spark conversation and raise vital funds for men’s health.

Falcons Movember team captain Rob Hawkins said: “Movember is something I look forward to every year and is possibly my favourite facial hair time of the year.

“It’s something I’ve always got involved with in the past and really enjoy doing but it’s obviously for a great cause too, so as captain I’m going to try and get all of the boys bought into it and as many of the supporters involved too to get as much support as we can.”

Already the owner of an impressive beard and moustache, Hawkins will be holding himself up to the Falcons team as a paragon of how facial hair should be grown. “I’ll be shaving my beard off but keeping my moustache to represent how a strong mo should look. I have my Fat Jack’s ‘tache wax ready at home and I will be twiddling the ends for a nice curly moustache throughout Movember.”

The Movember Foundation challenges men to bring the moustache back throughout the month of Movember and help to raise awareness and funds for its men’s health programmes.

Men sporting Movember moustaches effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November to raise much needed awareness around the often ignored issue of men’s health. And Mo Sistas can get involved too, doing their bit to support their Mo Bros and help make Newcastle Falcons a fundraising force.

Hawkins continued: “The Movember Newcastle launch night takes place tomorrow night and there are already quite a few of the boys going down. I stood up in our team meeting yesterday though and laid it down that everyone has to grow a moustache so I’m hoping we get a good buy in from the boys.

“Almost all of the Aviva Premiership clubs take part in Movember and we really want to get ourselves at the top of the fundraising league this year, so we’d encourage everyone to get involved – whether that be by joining out team and growing your own moustache or by sponsoring and supporting those that are.”

The Movember community has raised over £345 million to date and funded over 850 programmes in 21 countries. This work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues.

Programmes are either delivered directly by the Movember Foundation or by one of its men’s health partners. So far four million moustaches have been grown worldwide, but. Be the campaign won’t stop for as long as serious men’s health issues still exist.
