Falcons reveal special shirt for The Big One
The black and white striped shirt with tartan sleeves pays homage to Falcons great Doddie Weir and Newcastle United, and will be worn for the Gallagher Premiership game against Sale Sharks.
Weir’s foundation is raising money for awareness and research into Motor Neurone Disease, the currently-incurable condition with which the former Falcons and Scotland lock has been diagnosed.
From each shirt sold a donation will be given directly to the foundation, who will also be collecting on the day around St James’ Park.
Weir said: “Newcastle Falcons and their supporters were so generous in their backing of last season’s shirt which raised a significant sum of money, and I’m honoured that the club have decided to repeat the initiative.
“The money will certainly be put to good use as we look to drive awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and to improve the prospects for those of us who have been diagnosed, and it’s outstanding to see a bit of tartan alongside the famous black and white stripes!
“Newcastle will always have a special place in my heart and it’s great to see the Falcons making strides with events like The Big One at St James’ Park. Attracting more than 30,000 supporters to last season’s game was an incredible effort, and it would be great to see similar or even greater numbers there again on March 23.”
