FALCONS SECURE QUARTER-FINAL BERTH

The win made it 18 wins on the spin in all competitions for the Falcons as they continued their unbeaten run this campaign.

However, Richards insists there is a lot more to come from his troops ahead of the return to league action against Cornish Pirates in just under two weeks’ time.

Richards watched on as a Jonny Golding try and three penalties from the boot of Joel Hodgson made sure of the spoils against the Irishmen.

“It wasn’t a great performance by us and the lads found it difficult in some respects,” Richards told the gathering media.

Richards added: “It was a scrappy game and there was a lack of control on our part – if you don’t control the game then you don’t get the points that you deserve.

“We had a backline that haven’t really played much rugby this season, so it was always going to be a little bit disjointed and we knew it was going to be disjointed but not quite as disjointed as it was.

“The referees’ perception of the scrum was totally not in line with anything else that we’ve come across this season so we can’t understand what his interpretation was, but we’ll have a look at the game on the DVD.”

The Falcons can guarantee a home quarter-final with a win at Cross Keys this weekend, before continuing their Championship promotion charge at home to Cornish Pirates on Friday 25 January (kick-off 8pm).
