Latu scored a first-half pick-and-go try from a close-range ruck in the Tongan capital of Nuku’alofa, with Takulua racing 50 metres for a second-half try.

Takulua added three penalties and three conversions in another accomplished performance, setting his side up for Saturday’s home date against a Fiji squad which includes club-mates Vereniki Goneva and Tevita Cavubati.

Over in San Diego, meanwhile, Falcons lock Nick Civetta was part of the USA side which secured Rugby World Cup qualification with a 52-16 win over Canada.

Falcons back-five forward Evan Olmstead started for the Canadians, who lost Newcastle wing DTH van der Merwe with a knee injury prior to kick-off.
