Fearns: Let’s keep Premiership ball rolling
The Falcons’ last top-flight outing saw them battle to a first win at Exeter Chiefs, and after a fortnight of cup action they aim to continue their Premiership form at home to Worcester Warriors.
“I’m chomping at the bit to get back into it,” said Fearns ahead of the 7.45pm kick-off.
“The old body definitely needed a couple of weeks to get back to where it was, and hopefully we can pick up from where we left off with the win down at Exeter in terms of the Premiership games.
“We’re back at home, we want to go out there in front of our own supporters and get the job done on Friday night.”
The former Sale, Bath, Lyon and Rouen back-rower added: “Beating Exeter away was something we’ve waited a long time for and we’ve taken a lot of confidence from it, but the main thing now is just to make sure it’s not a one-off.
“We’re a team who will always work hard for each other, and that foundation of graft has always been there. The next step for us is to really focus on our attack, because people haven’t seen the best of us there yet.
“I don’t mean that in a negative way – what I mean is that we have a lot of growth potential in that area, and once we’re getting that right on a consistent basis, allied to our work rate, we’ll be a match for anyone. The players have to take the responsibility for that in terms of getting our roles right and executing the game plan, and once we do that in a properly consistent fashion we’ll really see things pick up even more.”
Keeping his feet firmly on the ground as he prepares for what would be his 12th appearance in Falcons colours, if selected, Fearns said: “We’re not a team that gets carried away or gets ahead of ourselves – we just keep grafting away.
“Teams will know they’re not going to get any easy points against us, and I don’t think many clubs like coming to Kingston Park on a Friday night. Having played at Sale and Bath I know first hand that some boys absolutely hate this fixture, and as the home team that’s something we have to use to our advantage.
“Worcester play some good rugby and throw the ball around a lot, and if we don’t respect them and allow them to play the game they want then it could be a long night for us. First and foremost we need to make sure we’re there physically, and that we’re putting a lot of pressure on their attack.”
