Hammersley Hopeful of using home advantage

Fullback Simon Hammersley says the Newcastle Falcons are up for the challenge of facing Pat Lam’s Connacht twice in ten days this Sunday, eager to cut out self inflicted wounds.

The 22 year old made his first competitive first team outing last weekend, since recovering from an ankle injury against Exeter in November and says mistakes allowed the Irish side to accelerate away in the final 20 minutes, after the scores were sat at 12-12.

“I think we put in an ok performance out in Connacht, we had a lot of opportunities but a lot of our own inaccuracies and ill discipline caused our downfall. It’s not every week you get the same team the next week so looking forward to the challenge at Kingston Park on Sunday.”

“We talked about it on Monday and the penalties we gave away and also some organisational things, but the focus this week has been on ourselves and making sure we go out, enjoy playing and express ourselves.”

In a head to head that has to date, always seen the home team come out on top, Hammersley is hoping home comforts can play a part in helping the team take a win that would greatly assist hopes of qualifying for the quarter finals.

“When we played there on Friday night, they had a great home crowd. It’s a different place from where I’ve played before, it’s quite an exposed ground with the greyhound track around the outside, being here on a different type of pitch, it will hopefully be a quicker game and with our home crowd it will make for a really good comparison and we’re hopeful we can get a win on Sunday.”
