HAMMERSLEY HOPES TO FEATURE AS 7s COUNTDOWN BEGINS
Its an event that marked the Falcons debut of senior academy player Simon Hammersley in 2013, with the young fullback having good memories of his involvement in the competition last year.
The 21 year old from Hull joined the Falcons academy last season on a part time basis, combining his studies for an economics degree at Durham University, is looking forward to the Kingston Park round after being part of the victorious Falcons 7s team in last year’s leg at Northampton’s Franklins Gardens.
Recalling the evening, Hammersley said: “The Premiership Rugby 7s series was a very good experience last year and the round at Northampton was very enjoyable. I had been working in London so I came up to Northampton on the day and didn’t really know the guys, but they made me feel welcome and the whole night was very enjoyable.”
“I’ve played a bit of sevens throughout my years and the Premiership Rugby series is a very good standard of the game. I remember we played some good stuff down at Northampton and it was good to play in a really good atmosphere in front of a big crowd.”
“If I’m involved this year, I hope the North East fans come and watch as it will be a good evening out. Sevens is a form of the game that is good to watch and is maybe a bit easier than a full 15 a side so hopefully it will be a good opportunity to promote the club.”
Hammersley is an exciting talent who has already made his first team debut for the Falcons, after featuring in the LV= Cup at Saracens in January and was an integral part of the rugby team at Durham University.
During his time, the team reached two BUCS finals at Twickenham and won one of these showpiece matches with Hammersley keen to give credit to the University for helping him get noticed by the Falcons.
“I’ve played rugby since I was really young but never to a really high standard until I came to the uni. With so many good players, there is a real professional ethos and that improved my approach to the game rapidly.”
“The coach at Durham, Alex Keay was a massive help to me and really helped me with strength and conditioning and getting into that professional mindset which in turn has helped me get this chance at the Falcons.”
Dual registered with Tynedale, Hammersley hopes to continue to make progress in his burgeoning career and stake a claim for first team inclusion.
“I’ll be playing at Tynedale this season, along with the A team and I’ll be hoping to break into the squad for LV= Cup or European Rugby Challenge Cup matches and try to impress in those. ”
It would be great to be able to get out in front of the fans and the great atmosphere we have at Kingston Park. I remember meeting a few of them down at Northampton and Bath for the sevens last year, where you wouldn’t really expect to see people make such a long journey their passion and loyalty is something that really makes an impression.
Tickets for the Kingston Park round are now on sale at £10 for adults, senior citizens and students while Under 16s cost only £5 while season ticket holders can claim two tickets as part of their 2014/2015 season ticket package.
