Hammersley rues missed opportunities

Falcons’ fullback Simon Hammersley described the team as “gutted” following Friday night’s loss against Worcester Warriors, but maintains it has to be moved on from as quickly as possible ahead of Saturday’s trip to Exeter.

Speaking post match on Friday, the 22 year old attributed the defeat to a combination of excellent defence from the visitors and a number of opportunities that the hosts failed to convert.

“Yeah, obviously the whole team is pretty gutted. We left a lot of opportunities out there. Credit to Worcester, the played pretty well and played the conditions better than what we did, they used the wind a bit more in the second half”

“They filled the field pretty well, I think in the past few games here we’ve managed to be pretty accurate at the breakdown and get ourselves on the front foot, whereas Worcester sent one or two in to slow us down and I think we struggled to generate any quick ball. Credit to them for making our play a lot more difficult.”

With three big games to come away to Exeter and Bath, before taking on Wasps at home on Easter Sunday, Hammersley says he and his team mates will look to earn what they can as quickly as they can in order to be prepared for the first of those three this coming weekend.

“It’s a matter of regrouping after this and not taking to long to dwell on it, Exeter are a pretty good side and we know from last year’s two visits, Sandy Park is a tough place to go and play and then on to the Rec with is another.”

“We’ll expect to be challenged in all areas, so we will need to get back to business as usual as soon as we can. Sport is one of those things, where you get a chance to put things right the next week. We’ll need to analyse and review the game and then get on with preparing to go for the win down there.”
