The centre scored the first of four Newcastle tries during Friday’s 26-21 victory over Edinburgh at BT Murrayfield – a result which came on the back of convincing wins over Nottingham, Doncaster Knights and Gala RFC.

Harris said: “You can say results don’t matter in pre-season, but for me they absolutely do.

“Winning is a habit, and we are now going into the league season with a huge confidence behind us.

“This was a massive step up from the games we had played previously – no disrespect to any of those teams.

“Murrayfield is a tough place to go, we hadn’t won away from home in a fairly long while and it was great to put a bit of an end to that run.”

Admitting it was not the perfect 80 minutes, the Cumbrian added: “We know we need to improve our discipline – be that giving away penalties or just the discipline of keeping our shape in defence.

“Some of our passing accuracy at times cost us, but when we were together and playing our patterns we looked good. We made yards and scored four good tries.

“I was pretty pleased overall with the performance – both personally and for the team.

“We played some good stuff and started well. We got lost a little after that and some of our shape fell to bits. Having said that, there were also a lot of positives on the night and things we can take into the Aviva Premiership season.”
