Falcons Community Foundation have been delivering the programme, which is supported by Change 4 Life and BT Sport’s Supporters Club, via their Durham development officer Phil Wallis, who is engaging well with the pupils and teachers he is engaging with.

Something to Chew on is an interactive programme that takes a rounded approach to teaching children about leading a healthy lifestyle.

Its key aims are to Improve young people’s understanding of what constitutes healthy eating and a healthy diet, as well as increasing their knowledge of food safety.

It also strives to increase young people’s uptake of physical activity and work as a contribution towards the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines that all children and young people should engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least an hour a day.

Durham development officer Phil Wallis said: “This programme has been hugely successful for us over the past calendar year, and we are finding the enthusiasm for learning about healthy eating and its impact is higher than ever. Combining these sessions with tag rugby really helps to give children that connection to exercise and healthy eating. “
