Junior Falcons enjoy all-access open day
More than 250 people were part of Newcastle Falcons’ first ever Junior Falcons open day on Wednesday as the Aviva Premiership Rugby club threw open its doors to members of its new supporters club for children aged under-16.
Hosted at the club’s Kingston Park Stadium, the fans in attendance were treated to an afternoon of exclusive access as the team continued their preparations for the league game against Leicester Tigers on Sunday.
Following registration and a short welcome from Falcons Community Foundation staff, the gathered members were given a behind the scenes tour where they were able to visit the players’ on site gym, the home dressing room and the club’s award-winning hospitality suites.
After gaining a glimpse of areas normally off limits to the public, it was to the stands as everyone gathered to watch the afternoon’s training session to see what goes into preparing for a top-flight professional rugby game.
Once the session was completed the entire Newcastle Falcons squad met with their fans, taking the time to pose for pictures and sign the all-important autographs.
The day was then completed by a question and answer session with Ruaridh Dawson, Gary Graham and Harrison Orr, which will form the next instalment of Falcons TV’s ‘Alfie Asks’ feature.
Well received by those who came, the Junior Falcons day delivered on providing further opportunities for the club’s next generation of fans to engage with their heroes, and it is hoped will go on to be established into the club’s calendar of events.
Junior Falcons co-ordinator Katy McGurk said: “This is the first Junior Falcons event to take place this season and it was brilliant to see such a good response from our junior supporters.
“It was a fantastic day and we’ve had some great feedback from both parents and our Junior Falcons members. The Falcons players were happy to come over after training and enjoyed mingling with all of our junior members, with some being put on the spot at our Q&A session.
“It’s a great time to be involved with the club and we hope by holding events like this we can encourage more Junior Falcons members to join us and support the team throughout the season.”
