Academy winger Tom Penny has been seizing on opportunities since returning from injury and is hoping he and his team mates, can use Friday’s final match in the Kings of the North cup to carry momentum and fitness into the Aviva Premiership season opener.

The Falcons travel to Sale Sharks on Friday evening, looking to finish the tournament with a win after taking a pair of bonus point’s last time out against Leicester, in a competition where they have been hampered by injuries and World Cup call ups.

For Penny though, ensuring the team is well prepared for the game against Gloucester on Ocober 16th is the most important thing to take from the tri team cup.

“Result haven’t gone our way, but we’ve had a very depleted back line and a lot of the academy boys have been stepping up which I think is good exposure.”

“There is a lot of things we are going to take on into the Premiership, it is giving us a bit of momentum and a lot of match fitness. You can’t go into the Premiership without having played a game.”

“It’s fair enough doing all the running and stuff but you need a few matches under your belt too.”

With at times a total of 29 players unavailable to the coaches for the Kings of the North, Penny has been able to jump straight back into first team affairs following a long time off the field and is pleased with his progress to date.

“I’ve been out six months with a groin injury, so it’s good to come back and get straight in the mix like I have been able to through the depleted back line.”

“It was a bit of rusty start against Leicester but I’m getting back to grips with it, the match fitness is coming up and I’m looking forward to hopefully being involved this Friday.”

Looking ahead to the main season which starts in just two weeks’ time, Penny is targeting another season of gradual improvement and earning the chance to impress his coaching team.

“I just want to kick on really. The Europeans are coming up in a couple of months’ time and hopefully I can get some game time then. If there are opportunities to play in the Premiership then of course and want to take that and just play the best that I can.”
