Latu settling well as new challenge begins
Tonga captain Nili Latu is settling in well to his new surroundings at Newcastle Falcons and after a week of acclimatising, is excited about getting his first appearance for his new club under his belt.
Having joined the club in the summer, Latu’s first week at the club came following the completion of the group stages of the Rugby World Cup, with initial introductions his first focus.
“It has been good so far, I’ve really enjoyed meeting everybody and getting to know them and now looking forward to getting out on the pitch and playing. It’s a new challenge but it is one I am really looking forward to.”
The 33 year old arrives at the Falcons following a successful spell in the Japanese Top League with the NEC Green Rockets and made the move looking for a new chapter to write in the story of his career.
“I’d been in Japan for eight years and a I guess I needed a new challenge. Knowing that a lot of the Tongan boys had come through Newcastle, it looked like a nice place and a good environment so I wanted to find out for myself. I’ve achieve a lot in my rugby career and this is a goal I wanted to tick off my list.”
Having impressed during Tonga’s Rugby World Cup campaign, which included a match against World Champions New Zealand in his new home city, Latu enjoyed his experiences and says fans can look forward to seeing the same style of aggressive play from him in the club’s colours.
“Everybody’s dream to play for the country, this was my second world cup and it is the pinnacle of your career, testing yourself against the best in the world. It was a great learning experience and I want to bring into Newcastle.”
“I like to get out there and throw my body around, so I’ll definitely be doing that once I get the opportunity to play, but I’m just going to enjoy my time on the field and that is what I am going to offer.”
