Lawson looks forward to season start
Former Gloucester man Scott Lawson is as eager as anyone for the start of a new Aviva Premiership season this Friday as an epic off season comes to a close and league action begins with the visit of Gloucester (KO 8pm).
It is a mouth-watering opening fixture for the Falcons, following two epic fixtures against Gloucester in season 2014/15 that promises action aplenty, but not one that has taken on any special focus, in the wake of April’s 82 point thriller.
“It’s a new season, we’ve been training for so long now and focusing on the pre season conditioning and rugby, there hasn’t been any mention of that game. There has been a full review of last season and things have been put in place to build on our strengths, but there hasn’t been a focus on last season at Gloucester.”
Following a huge evolution in the playing style and performances of the club in 2014/15, Lawson and the rest of the Falcons squad know that the new campaign is one where the tally in the W column of the league table becomes a much greater focus.
“This is my third year and the expectation is now far higher, much more so than it was after promotion and then in the second season back in the Premiership. This is a huge year for us to take the potential and the massive strides we took as a squad last season and turn them into results.”
“I think it’s definitely a results based season for us, we’ve had a years building and now its time to turn up and deliver on that. There will still be some performance factors because that’s what defines results but it is about winning some games and getting as high up that Premiership as we can.”
Having been in training and playing both pre season friendly’s and the Kings of the North cup since the end of June, the expectation ahead of the season to come is palpable around Kingston Park, with Lawson hopeful of involvement and getting stuck in.
“We want to get out there and get some really competitive games that mean something. It’s been a long pre season and the start of the Premiership, combined with some of the world cup boys coming back is giving the place a boost and a lift.”
“It’s exciting times, we’ve worked hard and now is the time to try and reap some rewards from that. Everyone in the league has done the same, we know they have trained hard and had the same focuses, so we just need to go out and give a good account of ourselves.”
