Lawson takes positives from pre-season triumph
The Scotsman dotted down twice from the back of the driving maul, saying: “There are lots of learning points for us, and we do understand that.
“We can definitely be more clinical, more accurate with the ball and in the contact area. Our line-out needs to be a little more accurate, but on the whole it was a good hit-out against a good team.
“Doncaster were physical and showed lots of intensity – we did some good things but have got plenty still to work on, and in that sense it was exactly what you want from a pre-season game.
“People can say Doncaster are a Championship team but they beat Bristol away in the final, so to get a 34-12 score-line against them was not a bad effort. We are headed in the right direction and getting ready for the Premiership season.”
On his own pair of tries Lawson said: “They were just off the back of the maul. With the new law variations we have been working hard on that area, I was just the last man into it but they were both team efforts from the whole forward pack.
“You have to pass the ball back in the maul now rather than the same guy just sliding to the back, and it is a facet we have focused on. It delivered three tries for us on the day, and in that sense we are pretty happy with it. When things aren’t going right in other areas we know we can turn to our maul, and along with the set-piece it is one of the foundations of our game.”
With Edinburgh away on August 26 rounding off the club’s pre-season schedule, the Scot said: “You’d have to think Edinburgh will be another step up.
“They will be a big physical side, they will give us a real test and you want that kind of progression during your pre-season games.”
