LOCAL TALENT VITAL INSISTS WELLS
The experienced head coach, who joined the Falcons in 2012 to work under interim boss Gary Gold, said: “One of the things that is giving the coaching staff a bit of a buzz is that we know that we have a string of quality young guys coming through.
“We’ve had to make some colourful signings but we also have the Scott Wilsons, Dom Barrows and George McGuigans – who had a fabulous season last year.
“And let’s not forget the likes of Will Welch and Mark Wilson are only in their early 20’s.”
Whilst a number of local lads have established themselves in Dean Richards’ set-up, there are other players looking to step up to the plate.
“If we can tap into the energy of Andy Davies and Tom Penny to name but two, and Zach Kibirige once he gets his leg sorted, then irrespective of the powerhouses we’ve brought in we have the young lads who are gagging to play as well,” said Wells.
Pre-season is now well underway on Tyneside with players being put through their paces every day under the watchful eye of Wells.
The former Leicester Tigers and England coach insists good old fashioned fitness work is a must ahead of a brand new season.
Wells said: “Pre-season is meant to be tough and everyone knows that you just have to knuckle down and get on with it. We’re doing things a little bit differently to last year because that didn’t work in its entirety so we’ve looked at things as a coaching group and also with senior players, and are starting to bring that through the squad.”
