More than 100 Newcastle school children received expert coaching as part of Sport Newcastle’s inaugural Sports Day, which was organised as part of their 50th Anniversary Celebrations.

The event, kindly supported by Curtis Gabriel and Northumbria Water, brought together Sport Newcastle’s grant beneficiaries Newcastle Rugby Foundation, Newcastle United Foundation and Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation and to deliver football, basketball, rugby league and rugby union skills sessions to children from West Walker, Walkergate, St Alban’s and Tyne View primary schools.

The event was held at Benfield School, also celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year.

Olympic Gold Medallist and Sport Newcastle Vice President Jonathan Edwards, said: “It has been really inspiring to see so many children taking part in today’s Sports Day. We would like to thank the schools for bringing the pupils, our grant beneficiaries Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation and Newcastle Rugby Foundation, Benfield School and our sponsors for their support in delivering the event.

“Sport Newcastle has a great reputation for supporting North East sport and for us to extend our reach into schools to hopefully inspire even more children to get involved in sport, is fantastic.”

Matt Lawn, Sports Teacher at Walkergate Community School added: “We’d like to thank Sport Newcastle for the opportunity to come to their Sports Day – it’s been brilliant. The children have thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions and have loved learning new skills. Experiencing the four sports together has been a great experience – one that they will remember for a long time!”
