The Royal Grammar School’s Rugby Club at RGS, founded in 1877, has been a powerful force in the school ever since: there have been numerous schoolboy international players over the years, along with current Falcons players William Welch, Joel Hodgson, Matt Thompson and Joel Hodgson graduating from the Jesmond-based school.
The RGS has been the most successful Northumberland School in the RBS Daily Mail U18 Cup since it started in the early 1990s. The 1st XV has reached the semi-final twice (1992 and 2001), the quarter-finals in 2008, and in 1994 and 2010 were runners-up in the final played at Twickenham.
Rugby at Durham School is one of the 3 major boys' sports. The qualities of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, integrity, endeavor, honour etc. which the game develops reflect the traditional values that the School is trying to promote.
The School has a nation-wide reputation, having reached the National Daily Mail U18 Cup Final (played at Twickenham) twice in recent years - in 2001 & 2006. The club also regularly produces schoolboy internationals.
The sport is run as a club - Durham School Football Club. The club is the fifth oldest recorded rugby club in the world - being founded in 1850 - thirteen years before even the RFU was founded.
The RGS v Durham game promises to be a fantastic showcase of the brilliant talent that is being produced in our local schools. All Falcons supporters are encouraged to come along to watch the game and support the boys.
