Olmstead out to continue pre-season progress

The summer signing made a scoring debut with a well-taken try during last weekend’s 50-12 victory over Nottingham, but sees room for improvement against their next opponents.

Olmstead said: “It was our first game of the season and we know as a team it wasn’t as crash hot as it should be. Obviously that is something to work on, but we were pretty happy considering where we are in the calendar.

“I played against Doncaster during my time with London Scottish and have had a few good battles with some of the guys. It will be good to continue those if I get the opportunity, and Doncaster are a big physical team. They have skill to go alongside that, they showed up well in last season’s play-off finals and it will be a step up for us.”

Loving his time on Tyneside and showing the speed of a winger with his second-half try, the former London Scottish lock said: “It was really good – an enjoyable experience to get out there in a Newcastle shirt.

“The game was close early on and was certainly no walk-over. Nottingham were a big physical team and we knew it was going to be tough, but we showed some good stuff at times. It is something to build on.

“It felt a little bit like we were just waiting to fire. We just missed the last pass or it wasn’t just quite there, but as the game wore on we began to finish off those opportunities.

“In terms of my own try it had been planned, if I’m honest. I was happy to be in the right place out on the wing but it wasn’t a fluke, it was something we’d worked on and it was nice for it to come off. Getting a try on my first run was pretty special and I’m just keen to keep going now.

Saturday’s game against Doncaster Knights is included in the Falcons’ 2016-17 season ticket membership package. Non-season ticket members can gain entry for £20 premium seating, £10 standard seating or standing and £5 for under-16s. To book call 0871 226 6060 or [**click here**.][1]
