Olympian Marcus Watson fully focused on Falcons

The flying winger ended last season on somewhat of a hot streak, dotting down the winner in the crunch game with London Irish before helping himself to a pair away to champions Saracens.

A summer in sevens mode preceded his Olympic endeavours as his Great Britain side reached the final against Fiji, but Watson has been wasting no time whatsoever when it comes to the bread and butter of 15-a-side rugby.

“I have been straight into the gym, it has been great to see everyone again and to be back in the mix here,” he said from Kingston Park Stadium, where on Thursday he was addressing a throng of local and national media, medal and all.

“Because my focus had been on the Olympics up until a couple of weeks ago I haven’t had too much time to think about the Aviva Premiership season, but I’ve been back for a short while now and it is abundantly clear how much hard work has been going in from the lads.

“The task for me is to switch on to that and catch up with them. I have to get up to speed as quickly as possible and that is now my only thought.”

Watson will not feature in the team’s final pre-season game against Edinburgh on Friday, but is already on with the task of ensuring he is razor sharp for the early portion of Aviva Premiership action.

“It has been straight back into it in terms of the banter from the lads,” he said.

“They all seemed to think I was going to rock up for my first gym session with my medal around my neck, but all joking aside they have been great with me and have welcomed me back.

“It is an exciting time to be at the Falcons and you can sense how up for it everybody is. We have added plenty of quality during the summer and I just can’t wait to put my hat in the ring again.”
