Peterson has 32 caps for the USA, the most recent of which came in July against Ireland in Dublin.

The Eagles travel to Canada for their first game on September 4 before hosting them in Colorado on September 11.

The aggregate winner over the two legs will then face Uruguay on October 2 and 9, with the winner of that match earning qualification for Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.

The aggregate loser of the USA v Canada match will face Chile over two legs on October 2 and 9, with the winner of that tie facing a further play-off in 2022 to earn a place in Rugby World Cup 2023.

Ex-Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Gary Gold is head coach of the USA national side, saying: “We’re looking forward to picking up where we left off in July with the bulk of our players from that group, and some returning faces to complement the squad.

“Canada has certainly improved as a team, they are a well-coached and formidable opponent that we need to respect.

“It is extremely important for us to be efficient and effective in our training so we can execute effectively, gain success on the field and hopefully progress. Overall, I’m excited to get this group back together and hit the ground running.”
