Pilgrim, 26 has made a good start to the campaign, helping the Falcons to maximum points in their opening two league games.

Director of rugby Dean Richards said: “We are obviously very disappointed as he has had a great start to the season and it is bitterly disappointing for him.”

Pilgrim, who joined the Falcons from Nottingham in the summer of 2009, has set his sights on a swift recovery.

He said: “I was really excited to continue my form into the rest of the campaign and I am really disappointed to be out for the season.

“These things happen in rugby and my aim is to come back stronger and better than before. I will now undergo a six month rehabilitation programme and I will be around the club to offer help and support wherever I can.”

The Birkenhead-born No.9 came into this term on the back of representing the Barbarians against Loughborough Students in the summer.
