Pirates match a pivotal test for Falcons’ promotion hopes
The unbeaten Falcons are currently 12 points clear of Ealing Trailfinders going into the last ten rounds of the Greene King IPA Championship, with the Pirates just a single point behind.
The men from the Mennaye Field boast the Championship’s top try-scorer with Callum Patterson dotting down nine times this season, while fly-half Javier Rojas Alvarez is the division’s top scorer with 96 points to his name.
Newcastle were 18-9 winners when the two teams met in Penzance at the back end of October, just one of three defeats suffered by the Cornishmen this season.
Among the Falcons’ try-scorers that day was back-three star Tom Arscott, who said: “Penzance is a tough ground to go and play at, and they’re a good side.
“Not many teams win down there, and Pirates are one of those teams who always seem to be there or thereabouts near the top at the end of the season.
“A lot of guys have come through there and made great careers for themselves, and it’s a rugby-mad part of the country.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s televised return leg, Arscott added: “They’ll be coming up here and putting a big target on our back, wanting to be the team that comes to Kingston Park and ends our unbeaten run in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
“The thing for us is just to play our own rugby, stick to our game plan, and hopefully from there things should go well.”
