Players help inspirational teen’s incredible journey
The Blyth RFC player has raised over £15,000 for local cancer charities as he continues to overcome a brain tumour which saw him losing the use of his lower body for a number of months.
Having been a fit and active boy prior to his diagnosis just over a year ago Connor is now able to walk for short periods, and had committed himself to walking the marathon distance of 26.2 miles during March to raise money for CLIC Sargent at Newcastle’s RVI Hospital and The Toon 2 Town charity, who work with local good causes.
Bit by bit, Connor has been chipping away at the marathon target all month despite suffering from poor balance, strength and co-ordination, and he was joined for the final stretch of the journey by Newcastle Falcons’ players, who accompanied him round the Kingston Park pitch in accordance with social distancing guidelines.
Director of rugby Dean Richards and head coach Dave Walder then presented Connor with a signed Falcons shirt and ball, Richards stating: “Connor is a real inspiration.
“It certainly puts life into perspective when you speak to Connor and hs family, and hear what he has been through. But despite facing those huge difficulties his first thought has been how he can help others, and it’s an incredible effort to have raised more than £15,000 so far.
“I would urge everyone to read Connor’s story and to donate if they are able to, and once restrictions allow we would certainly like to welcome him to one of our games as a guest of honour and to have him with the boys in the changing room before and after the match.”
