Jinking winger Mateo Carreras joined Newcastle Falcons in December 2020 from Jaguares, going on to become a fans’ favourite.

The former Argentina Under-20s star has also represented his country on the international 7s stage, and is renowned for his pace and quick footwork.

Carreras’ debut season saw him making five first team appearances, his eye-catching runs and hard defensive hits earning him a call-up to Argentina’s full touring squad in July 2021.

He made his Pumas debut during the 2021 Rugby Championship, going on to score against France and Ireland during the November 2021 test window.

Carreras played 12 times for the Falcons during the 2021-22 campaign, scoring twice, but the 2022-23 season saw his name up in lights due to a string of incredible performances.

Dotting down a remarkable 14 tries in his 19 games, it was quality as well as quantity – with the Tucuman flyer winning the Premiership Try of the Season award for his stunning solo score away to Northampton.

Taking two Premiership Try of the Month awards and being named in the BT Dream Team for 2022-23, Carreras was also in the Argentina team which beat England at Twickenham in November 2022.

The Puma cleaned up at the Falcons’ end-of-season awards, winning the players’ player, coaches’ player and fans’ try of the season prizes.
