Newcastle Falcons have got their Premiership Rugby 7s Group D campaign off to a winning start with a 26 – 21 victory over Leicester Tigers, in the first match of the Premiership Rugby 7s at the Northern Echo Arena.

Tries from Chris Harris, Andy Davies, and a brace for Tom Catterick, along with three conversions saw the Falcons home against the men from Welford Road.

In a tit for tat first half, Tigers opened the scoring with a converted try from Andy Bulumakau before Falcons centre Chris Harris broke to a roar from the strong crowd to reduce the arrears to two.

Another converted try for the Tigers was then matched by Davies to see the teams head to the break 12 – 14.

Virtually straight from the kick off, the Falcons seized the lead following a composed team effort. Following a break by Davies on half way, the young scrum half found Brown in space who was able to advance up field.

Unable to outpace the shadow defence, the winger managed to get the ball away into space which was collected by Harris before Catterick was on hand finish off the move and with a second successful conversion, assume the lead at 19 – 14

With the restart put out on the full, Leicester were able to build pressure in the Falcons 22 and while the home team’s solid defence earned a turnover, Leicester were able to steal the ball back for George Tresseder to score under the sticks, making the conversion a formality.

Mark Laycock’s side still had a response to call on and with 90 seconds remaining, struck from a turn over at the breakdown that sent captain Catterick away into space, for a fourth converted score.

The Falcons next match gets underway at 20:35 against Sale Sharks.
